Delivery Windows: Planning a Truck That Goes Out More Than Once

Restaurants don’t want “tomorrow”. They want “before lunch prep” or “after the lunch rush”. Delivery windows let you promise that — and still load the truck once.

Windows, not just a day

A delivery day tells a kitchen when, roughly. A window tells them when exactly: 6 to 9 in the morning, 12 to 3, 5 to 7. The breakfast café wants the first, the steakhouse doesn’t open its back door until noon. When the customer chooses the window as they order, your driver stops knocking on locked doors.

How many windows to offer

Offer the windows your trucks can actually keep. If one truck covers the east end and can finish a loop in three hours, three windows a day is honest: 6–9, 12–3 and 5–7. A window can be offered on some days only, or to some areas only — some postal codes and not others. Start with fewer; adding one later is easy, taking one away annoys people.

Loading the whole day the night before

Many distributors pack and load in the evening, so the truck leaves at dawn with every window’s orders on it. That’s fine — it just means the driver needs to know which stops come first. The windows do that work: everything on the truck is the day’s, and the customers who chose 6 to 9 are the ones to finish first.

What the driver sees

In Supligo the driver’s phone shows the run grouped by window. The window being delivered now leads — “6:00–9:00 · Deliver now · 4 left”, or “Running late” once nine o’clock has passed — and the rest wait under their own heading: “12:00–3:00 · Later”. When the morning stops are done, the next window moves up on its own.

Each stop has the address, the order number, what the customer wrote on the order (“back door, buzz twice”), and three buttons side by side: Navigate, Call and Text. A refused case is recorded at the door with a photo, and the customer is only charged for what they took. The evening before, the driver can also see tomorrow’s truck: how many stops, when it leaves.
